GPS 10x Review

GPS 10x

GPS 10x

The Holux GM-270 we’d been using recently died, so we replaced with a Garmin GPS 10x. Here’s what I think of it so far.

Positive

  • Tiny. It’s easy to clip to a belt or pocket and forget.
  • Fast. It picks up a signal much, much more quickly than the Holux and a bit faster than our other Garmin units
  • Easy. Setting up the iPaq to get its signal from the GPS 10x took about 10 minutes the first time and was trivial after that.
  • Universal charger. It uses a mini-USB socket for charging which cuts down on the number of cords you need to keep around.

Negative

  • Battery life. The battery life on this thing sucks. It’s only good for about 8 hours on a charge as opposed to the 22 hours described in the manual. Apparently if you’re willing to give up accuracy you can extend the battery life, but that somewhat defeats the purpose of having a GPS.
  • Not physically connected to iPaq. This can be a positive or a negative, but it does mean that you now have one more gadget to keep track of.

Overall, I would recommend this unit to anyone who needs a GPS for their Bluetooth device. Be aware that the battery life is terrible, so you may want to order an extra battery if you plan to use this for longer than 8 hours. I bought ours from Prairie Geomatics.
