The Manitoba Land Initiative has a huge variety of maps and shapefiles. I’m going to go through some of the maps and shapefiles that I find useful and describe how I use them.
The first group of shapefiles is Administrative Boundaries. Since Tone Ag’s work is in agriculture and not in politics, most of these boundaries are not very useful for us. However, there are three shapefiles here that I use in every project.
When you’re trying to find a piece of land in Manitoba, you’re often given a field legal description. The first step in locating the land is to find the township it falls under. This shapefile shows you the townships across Manitoba. If my shortcut script isn’t working, I start off by pulling up this grid, labeling it with the township field, then browsing across it till I find the township and range that I’m interested in.
Municipalities/Local Government Districts
As the name indicates, this shapefile has the boundaries of all the Municipalities and Local Government Districts in Manitoba. Since a lot of the other shapefiles on this site are broken down by municipality or local government district, this shapefile is very useful for finding out what area a given piece of land is within.
Ortho Photo Grid
The final shapefile that I use from this page is the Ortho Photo Grid. An orthophoto is an aerial photograph that has been adjusted so that it can be used much as a map would be There are a couple of different shapefiles representing different sizes of orthophotos. Mostly I use the MrSid Mosaic Tiles because those require fewer photos to cover a given area.
Stay tuned for more MLI coverage and the maps I find useful!
