Arcview Oddities

Arcview suddenly stopped recognizing my MrSID files.  These .sid files provide the orthophoto backgrounds for most of my maps, so this is a major problem.

I downloaded the MrSID files again so see if they’d been corrupted, checked the MrSID extension, and was contemplating a clean reinstall of ArcView 3.2, or the even more dismal prospect of rebuilding all my ArcView projects.  Luckily, I remembered that ArcView starts behaving oddly when my temporary files directory gets too full.  I cleaned out my temporary directory and everything is back to normal.

The default temporary files directory in Windows XP  is “C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Temp”.  You can find your temporary files directory by pressing Start/Run and typing “cmd”, then typing “set TEMP”. You will not be able to delete all the files in your temporary files directory as some of them are in use whenever your computer is running.  Sort the files by date and start by deleting the oldest ones till you’ve cleared a good portion of the files.  (Alternately, a tool such as CCleaner can do this for you automatically.)

Remember this tip when ArcView starts acting oddly and you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches!

“Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.”
