Older Than Dirt

How old is dirt? Ethan Siegel answers that question at his Starts with a Bang blog. Be sure to read the comments as some take issue with his conclusion.

John Heard discussed the age of Manitoba’s soils in a recent print article. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep a copy of it, but as I recall he said that soils on the Canadian prairies are fairly young. Given that a lot of soil development is due to organic activity that slows or stops during our cold winters, prairie soil is at a much younger developmental stage than tropical soils.

Regardless of the age of your soil, be sure to take good care of it!
