Lilian ‘s post on the Food and Farming Canada blog, Feeding the world without destroying it? asks the question: how do we feed the increasing human population sustainably?
There aren’t quick answers, but a lot of what I heard at the Manitoba Agronomists’ Conference this year gave me hope. There are so many ways we can boost the productivity of our current land base – better crops, more efficient fertilizers, more precise land management and many others. The question we’re going to have to answer is what trade-offs are we willing to make? Will we accept an intensive livestock operation in our backyards? If not, will we eat less meat or will each of us raise livestock of our own? Will we accept genetically modified foods? If not, are we willing to accept paying higher prices for less food? They’re not easy questions and each one answered brings up new questions.
