Manure Transportation Costs

One of the questions that comes when discussing manure separation is “What do we do with the separated solids?” The phosphorus content of the liquids has been reduced enough to allow for application near the barn, but the solids and their nutrients still need to be dealt with.

Extension.org has How much does it cost to transport 1 Ton of manure and/or compost on a per mile basis? as one of their frequently asked questions. I was hoping for more details but their linked post Costs of Manure Application and Transport provides a link to a spreadsheet which will let you plug in the figures you get from your local hauler.

It’s not enough just to separate out the phosphorus – it has to be worth hauling to the farther field as well or you’re no better off.
