Burn down your cities and leave our farms, and your cities will spring up again as if by magic; but destroy our farms and the grass will grow in the streets of every city in the country.
– William Jennings Bryan
I was reading If agriculture dies, ‘there is nothing’ about the water situation in California. I’ve also been reading Jared Diamond’s Collapse which discusses the downfall of civilizations. The theme throughout the book is how civilizations expand during good years or centuries. Then bad times come and the civilizations collapse. A prime driver of the collapses is the way changes to the climate and environment affect agriculture When the farms go, the cities collapse.
