Garmin GPSmap76 Not Finding Satellites

We had a few of our Garmin GPSmap76 units unable to find satellites. It was pretty obvious that they were out of whack – the date was wrong, the time was wrong, and the unit was beeping plaintively that it could not find satellites. Here’s what I did to fix them.

  1. Turn the GPS on outside where it has a clear view of the sky. Leave it for 10 minutes or so.
  2. If the GPS has found satellites, you’re set. If not there will be a little menu on the screen “Poor Satellite Reception. Star Simulator, New Location, Stored w/o Batteries, Continue Acquiring.”
  3. Choose Stored w/o Batteries and leave the GPS alone for another 10 minutes or so

That solved the problem for me, so I thought I’d pass it on. If it’s still not working, try moving the GPS to a different location (even a few hundred yards away) and ensure it has an unobstructed view of the sky.
